Growing in Discipline & Discipleship

“Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.” Proverbs 3:6

As disciples and followers of Jesus Christ, we must emulate His example in our daily lives. Another aspect of discipleship is discipline – the willingness and practice of spiritual hard work to become more like our Lord.

Here are a few key elements of discipline and discipleship:

  • Commit to regular prayer and Bible study
  • Surrender your desires and submit to the will of God through self-denial. In Matthew, Jesus says, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me” (Matthew 16:24). Let go of your plans and ambitions, and seek to align your life with God’s plan for you.
  • Serve others! Start with your own home before looking elsewhere for opportunities to serve others. Expand on your circle of influence: friends, extended family, neighborhood, town, city, state, etc.
  • Seek to grow spiritually and become more like Jesus. It means becoming more patient, kind, loving, and self-controlled.

We can grow spiritually and become more like Jesus by committing to discipline and discipleship. And as we do, we will be better equipped to fulfill our calling as disciples and women by positively impacting our families, communities, and world.

Tips:

  • Take it one day at a time, one habit at a time.
  • Be intentional about your screen usage; technology is meant to be a tool, not a drug.
  • Bundle tasks with something meaningful, like taking a walk with a friend or family member, washing dishes while listening to a podcast, etc.
  • Rest after you get things done, not before.
  • Commit to an accountability partner who will speak the truth to you and help motivate you to stick to your new habits.

“Discipline is choosing between what you want now and what you want most.”
